About
Welcome to Samurai Express Japanese Steakhouse, where the art of teppanyaki meets a convenient and casual dining experience in the heart of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Located at 401 28th St SE, this locally owned gem has quickly gained a reputation for its flavorful offerings and engaging atmosphere.
As you step inside, you'll be greeted by a clean and inviting environment, perfect for both family dining and intimate gatherings. The friendly staff ensures that every meal is served hot and with a smile. Samurai Express specializes in teppanyaki, where skilled chefs prepare your meal right before your eyes, making the experience both delicious and entertaining.
The menu boasts a variety of options, making it easy for everyone to find a favorite. From spring rolls and crab rangoon appetizers ($5.50 each) to mouthwatering entrées like teppanyaki filet mignon and teppanyaki salmon, there's something for every palate. I personally recommend trying the teppanyaki salmon with fried rice; it received rave reviews from customers who exclaimed it to be the best food they've ever had!
The side offerings are equally enticing, with choices ranging from garlic noodles ($7.25) to various protein options, including shrimp fried rice and deliciously tender steak. The house-made sauces, such as the popular yum-yum sauce, add an extra layer of flavor and have become a standout feature among returning visitors.
Customer feedback highlights the restaurant's commitment to quality. For instance, many patrons praise the filet mignon for its tenderness, while others rave about the crispy, fluffy dumsplings. Although some reviews point to occasional inconsistencies—like dry chicken or less-than-stellar tuna—the management's responsiveness to feedback demonstrates their dedication to improvement and guest satisfaction.
In conclusion, Samurai Express Japanese Steakhouse offers a vibrant dining experience flavored with excitement and taste. Whether you're drawn in by the engaging teppanyaki grill or looking to enjoy classic Japanese dishes, you’re sure to find something that excites your taste buds. “ I love this place! Great locally owned restaurant. Very, very clean! My husband had the teppanyaki Fillet and I had the scallops! Both of our meals were fresh and hot! Nice portions. ”
“ I would do 3.5 if I could because it was a somewhat decent experience. I'll start with the good The seaweed salad and crab rangoons had great portion sizes for the price and tasted great. Rice and vegetables were great with my meal. The bad and ugly My chicken was unbearably dry, I tried taking smaller bites but I was chewing forever before I could finish the bite, I knew it was overcooked because there were some juicy pieces in my chicken. But that was my meal I don't care what I eat I just eat it. Now when it comes to my lovey girlfriend's meal it better be good. She ordered the spicy tuna with spicy mayo, but not only did she not receive the mayo until it was asked for again the tuna itself was disgusting. Having worked in food service I knew right away that the tuna that was served was either freezer-burnt or sat out too long and oxidized, we both spat out a piece we tried. The texture was mushy and unf This was fortunately fixed by the manager kindly removing it from the bill which was appreciated. ”
“ Very clean. Friendly service and the food is great! The filet mignon was tender & juicy even tho I ordered it med-well. The dumplings are soft and tender with delicious pork centers. The salad dressing is the bomb! Also the yum-yum sauce for the steak. Will definitely be back again. Was not disappointed with this dinner. ”
“ Hands down the best food I have ever had in my entire life. My buds have been yearning for something this good. For a very long time. If you love Salmon, 10000% recommend the Teppanyaki Salmon w/ Fried Rice. The Crab Rangoon’s are out of this world - also in every bite. Highly underrated. Thank you so much!!! :) ”
“ It was okay, but I know a handful of Chinese restaurants that will do better at half the price. This popped up recently so I thought I'd give it a try. The staff was very friendly, the food was good, the portion size was good. I shared it with my 8 yr old daughter and 2 year old daughter. They enjoyed the noodles. The soup was a let down, it tasted watered down, and was definitely an afterthought. If everything else was spot on I'd let it pass, but soup is so easy, and could really have knocked it out of the park. I got the tuna, which was okay. I'll give it another shot, get some steak and maybe a few other sides next time, but I'll wait for a coupon on a special. ”
“ I saw this place opened a few weeks ago and checked out their menu. The menu is small, but very appetizing. Just a foreword, this is a Must Try! Give them a shot you won't regret it. It's nice inside, but not really set up right now due to pandemic and carry out only. I ordered the Teppanyaki Filet Mignon which comes with Fried Rice, Garlic Noodles, and Soup (Miso?) or Salad. Plus a side order of Tonkatsu (Pork Cutlet). I order my steak medium and it was cooked perfectly with great seasoning. The steak was great, however it came with a Yum Yum Steak Sauce that was fantastic and made the steak outstanding. The fried rice was very good. The Garlic Noodles were outstanding, and worth going just for an order of them. The soup was nice and hot, and hit the spot. The Tonkatsu was good, just not as good as main meal. They have the Teppanyaki in many varieties: 2 steaks, chicken, shrimp, scallops, tuna, and maybe 1 more. The meal was very well packed and easily survived the ride home. The service was very good and friendly. Overall a 5 star review and I will be back very soon! ”
“ My husband got us these & I never had something so tasty. I normally do not eat stuff like this because I have kid taste buds but this is so good. My hubby got the chicken & I got steak. Look how amazing their food is. Staff is very friendly! They are located right at the corner of 28th St & Madison Ave. Across the street from BP gas station & next door to McDonalds. ”
